NEW CONNECTIONS

Sponsored Connections - Nominated Connections - Tariffs

The UHI Millennium Institute (formerly the University of the Highlands and Islands Project) operates the UHI Network to provide data network connectivity services to the UHI partnership and selected Education and Research sector organisations located in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland  (see map of coverage area).

New Organisation connections will almost always involve use of JANET to access the global Internet. This use of JANET requires a License, which is normally either a Primary or a Sponsored connection license.

Most new connections to the UHI Network are Additional Connections for an Organisation which is already licensed for use of JANET, either through a Primary or a Sponsored connection. The UHI Network has Points of Presence (PoPs) in most of the towns of the region - see map - and connections will be made to the most suitable PoP, which is usually the nearest one.

Connection charges are subject to negotiation and depend on a number of factors, including:

  • cost of the 'access circuit' required to make the connection
  • equipment costs to terminate the access circuit
  • bandwidth of the access

Please contact Jem Taylor, Network Development Manager, in the first instance.

Primary Connection

The UHI Network provides JANET Primary Connections to a number of sites as a contractor to UKERNA under the terms of the JANET RPAN contract.

For a Primary Connection, UKERNA will license the connecting organisation and then 'nominate' the connection to UHI under the RPAN contract. These connections are therefore sometimes termed 'Nominated Connections' and the connected organisation is a 'Nominated Organisation'. This license is normally only appropriate for organisations such as FECs and HEIs.

Sponsored Connection

UHI Millennium Institute is able to provide JANET Sponsored Connections to other appropriate organisations, and interested parties should contact Jem Taylor, Network Development Manager at UHI in the first instance.

For a Sponsored Connection, UHI will obtain a license from UKERNA and make all arrangements directly with the connecting organisation. In this case UHI will complete a Sponsored License Application Form with the assistance of the connecting organisation. This form must be sent to UKERNA by UHI; only UHI can apply for the Sponsored Connection License.

Local Learning Centres

Local Learning Centres which operate as subsidiaries of UHI Academic Partners are not subject to JANET license and bandwidth charges, but they may be given access to other UHI services including internal voice telephony and videoconferencing service, and so operate under a different charging basis detailed here.

Tariffs

Connection charges depend on status, bandwidth, location, technology, and so on, and are subject to negotiation. In general, a more detailed study is required before a firm quote can be issued. For guidance, see our Tariff Pages for indicative costs and a background to what charges apply.
