UHI

The UHI Network
Education & Research Networking for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland
UHI Academic Partners

Primary Connections made to UHI Academic Partners under the terms of UHI's RPAN contract are made under special arrangements as part of the UHI Academic Partnership arrangement.

UHI Local Learning Centres

Local Learning Centres which operate as subsidiaries of UHI Academic Partners are not subject to the JANET license and bandwidth charges mentioned below, but they may be given access to other UHI services including internal voice telephony and videoconferencing service, and so operate under a different charging basis which is detailed in a separate document.

Please contact Jem Taylor, Network Development Manager, in the first instance.

External Organisations

Connections to organisations eligible for JANET service tariff are subject to four distinct charge elements, which make up the total charge from UHI to the connecting organisation. Only the last two are under UHI's control.

1) JANET license fees

Where applicable, the JANET Sponsored Connection license fee is charged on at cost. See UKERNA's documents Connecting to JANET, how to connect for details.

2) JANET bandwidth charges

A charge is levied by UKERNA on UHI on the basis of the combined bandwidth of all such connections.

3) UHI Network bandwidth charges

The contribution to the fixed overhead costs of providing the UHI Network based on the bandwidth of the connection as a share of the total connected bandwidth. UHI is required to recover the total cost of providing the UHI Network from all connections made to it. At the time of writing this charge is calculated to be about £2 per kilobit per year, which equates to around £4,000 per annum for a 2Megabit connection.

4) Access Circuit costs

The direct cost of making the 'last mile' connection between the UHI Network and the connecting organisation. This cost depends on factors including location, bandwidth, supplier and technology. The minimum cost would be around £2,500 per annum and a typical cost would be between £5,000 and £10,000 per annum. There is no upper limit to this figure other than budgetary considerations on the part of connecting organisations.
